St. Augustine Inlet Dredging Update

St. Augustine Inlet Dredging Update
St. Augustine Port, Waterway, and Beach District (aka St. Augustine Port Authority) Commissioner Jay Bliss reported that there is $500,000 available for dredging Porpoise Point located at the St. Augustine Inlet and the Intracoastal in Northeast Florida. Some 80,000 cubic yards will be dredged from Porpoise Point, widening the inlet and hopefully reducing the velocities of the current in the area.

Plans are that hopefully St. Johns County will get the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) permits to dredge the ebbshoal bars in the St. Augustine Inlet within the week (by the end of April 2011). According to Commissioner Bliss, "The dredging hopefully commences this coming winter; county has funds for the project."

Safe passage through the St. Augustine Inlet is recommended by favoring the red marker side of the channel.

Dredging at Porpoise Point and inside the St. Augustine Inlet means a pipeline through Salt Run all the way to the beach at the County pier in St. Augustine Beach this Fall. Please read my more detailed report on the dredging from November 2009.

Minutes for the St. Augustine Port Authority can be found here.

Porpoise Point is located on the Atlantic Ocean, St. Augustine Inlet and Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) as shown in the plat below.
