What do Rue McClanahan and Vilano Beach Have in Common?
Rue McClanahan was a fabulous actress who will be missed. Her best-known role was as Blanche Devereaux in The Golden Girls.
Reading all the wonderful things about Ms. McClanahan I couldn't help but notice many of them missed one fact. Rue McClanahan starred in a TV show that was filmed right here in Vilano Beach in 1999. My husband and I watched a nighttime scene with Rue McClanahan and co-star Gregory Harrison filmed on Vilano Road and enjoyed seeing the intricacies of on location filming. Locals will remember the tall boom that illuminated the set in 1999.
The Vilano Beach Motel was the location of WB Network's Safe Harbor. All of the 13 episodes for this one-hour series were filmed at The Vilano Beach Motel over an eight-month period. The set will forever be entrenched in our minds, as 1999 is the year The Vilano Beach Motel became known as Magic Beach when the producers erected the Magic Beach sign that remains to this day. We now all call the motel The Magic Beach and enjoy the jumping rabbits on the neon sign.
I was the listing agent that sold the Magic Beach in 2005. I took the aerials in this blog at that time. It was foreclosed earlier this year and is being purchased from the bank by the owners of OceanView Lodge (the former Ocean Blue II), a nearby Vilano Beach motel.
We had monthly full moon parties by the pool. Hopefully, we start those parties again with the new owners. The neighbors all came out and brought a covered dish and we would have local musicians perform.
