Trailers are being removed from Vilano Road in St. Augustine, Florida.
Vilano Road is the main road in the Vilano Beach Main Street community (aka Vilano Beach Town Center).
I really would be hard pressed to think of a question I have been asked more than, "When will they remove the trailers from Vilano Road?" Well, maybe "have you been silly your entire life?" But concerning Vilano Road and the Vilano Beach Town Center, this question has been asked more than "When are we getting a grocery store?"
Yes, I have kept tabs on the frequency of this question and truly more people have been wanting to see the dilapidated trailers removed than were concerned about the when and where of a grocery store. See, we have many grocery store alternatives, but the trailers appeared to be a mainstay of the community.
Last summer/early fall, Ameris Bank, the bank that foreclosed on the property, evicted the remaining residents from the trailers. So, we all felt the time was near.
Bids were done and I can report that as of Tuesday, February 16, 2010, the trailers started being removed. Yesterday, Wednesday, February 17th, while viewing the demolition, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) inspector told me they should be done by next Tuesday, February 23, 2010. So, I am guessing at least by the end of the month the trailers will be removed. The DEP inspector also told me there is asbestos in the tiles and glue holding down the vinyl floors in many of the trailers. The demolition crew must do a "wet" demolition to prevent the spewing of asbestos. So if you see clouds of dust, let me know (oh, and don't inhale!).
The crew has been removing scrap metal and other valuable parts from the trailers before demolishing them for the trash heap.
Changes are coming to Vilano Road and the Vilano Beach Town Center. This beautiful community located on the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal has a beautiful streetscape and is awaiting redevelopment. To better understand Vilano Beach and its unique location, please read this.
